In Machu Picchu itself, there is only one hotel and this is called the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge. Since it is the only hotel in town, the prices tend to be quite steep with rooms that can cost up to US$795 overnight. However, most tourists opt to choose Aguas Calientes to spend the night in as a cheaper alternative.
In Aguas Calientes, some of the more popular hotels people stay at are Hostel Machu Picchu, Gringo Bills Hostal Continental, and even the Machu Picchu Pueblo hotel which is closer to the ruins but is also highly priced like the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge.
During peak season, going to Machu Picchu will guarantee at least 3,000 other visitors into the area. The way to travel from Cusco to the Machu Picchu area is to take the train which will require a ride lasting from three to four hours into the town of Aguas Calientes. Entrance into the sanctuary of the ruins is US$50 per person.
There are some tourist packages available that will give you a leisurely and luxury tour throughout Machu Picchu. It is called the Hiram Bingham class trip which will cost a tourist about US$500 per person. The class trip covers the entrance into the Machu Picchu area, gourmet meals both ways, and a specific guide to bring you through the area.
Because of the history of the place, as well as the fantastic ruins to visit, Machu Picchu and Aguas Calientes is a perfect place to meet and mingle with other visiting guests. If it fits your style and budget, the best views can be gotten if you check into the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge because it give exceptional access to the ruins and the majestic view of the mountains surrounding it.
