Peru Independence
Peru Independence from Spanish rule and any other foreign domination was declared on July 28 1821. The Liberation Movement that influence peruvians started in Río de la Plata (Argentina) and the region of the Orinoco Llanos (Venezuela) , in 1820 and was led by Don José de San Martín and Don Simón Bolivar.
Jose de San Martin and The Liberation Army of Peru left the port of Valparaiso, on August 20, 1820, the expedition consisted of 4118 men. After 18 days of sailing, the memorable September 8, 1820, the landing of the Expedition in the Bay of Paracas (Ica) began . Next, the patriots took Pisco, Chincha and other immediate areas. Jose de San Martin then set up his headquarters in Pisco.
Don José de San Martín proclaimed the independence and vows of Peru in Lima's Plaza Mayor (Main Square) with the following words:
"PERU FROM THIS MOMENT IS FREE AND INDEPENDENT BY THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE AND BY THE JUSTICE OF ITS CAUSE THAT GOD DEFENDS. VIVA LA PATRIA!
VIVA LA LIBERTAD!
VIVA LA INDEPENDENCIA!"
According to historian Jorge Basadre, these words symbolize a historic change, the principle of "the will of the people" emerged there. This is what other witness said:
"I have not seen a more lucid or larger contest in America. The cheers were continuosly echoed around the town ... I was one of the people that walked the flag of Peru Independence on that day.
No prize could be more flattering to me than seeing the banner of freedom raised in the center of the most important city in this part of America. On that same night there was drink and dance at the town hall, no troops managed to contain the crowd of people and the next night there was a dance in the main Palace".
