The Temple of the Sun Machu Picchu, is among the many intact remnants of Inca culture that can be seen in Peru. The temple was built in honor of Inti who is actually the sun and is also an important god of Inca civilization.

During the winter solstice, the sun rays passes through the central window and it falls directly on the large ceremonial stone which situated at the middle of the temple.

There are many opinions regarding the purpose of the temple. One of them states that the temple was built as an altar for female priests or the Virgins of the Sun but skeletal remains dug at the temple are of both sexes.

Other opinions regarding the reason why the temple was built mention that the Pachacuti, or the great ruler of the Inca built the temple to serve as his own monument.

Aside from the Temple of the Sun Cusco - Peru, there are many opinions stating why The Lost City of the Incas was built. Due to the many water channels and terraces found in the city, Machu Picchu could have been an elaborate farm for the Incas.

Others mention the existence of stones that mark where the sun is positioned during the equinox so they say that Machu Picchu must have been an observatory.

The elaborate dwellings would suggest that Machu Picchu was a summer residence for the Inca royalty. But it wouldn’t be farfetched to say that Machu Picchu is all of the above, don’t you think?

Cusco to Machu Picchu Train

The train sets out for Machu Picchu and arrives in Aguas Calientes.
