Yurimaguas Peru
The District of
Yurimaguas Peru, is located in the Huallaga River drainage system. It has an area of 2.684 km2 with an estimated population of 61.968 inhabitants (2005). Yurimaguas is the first district in economic importance of the province of Upper Amazon.
According to tradition, Yurimaguas comes from the fusion of the Indians Yuris with Omaguas. The Yuris inhabited the region next to one end of the rivers Acre, Purus and Yurúa. The Omaguas consisted of several groups in the region between the rivers Tunguruas and Apuren. Both territories belong to Brazil in present-days.
By the year 1710, the Jesuit Father Jose Jimenez appears , who met with the tribe formed by Yuris-Omaguas, with them he began his work of catechesis. He built the first church and endowed it with bells and an image of Nuestra Señora de Las Nieves.
Just when the Independence of Peru around 1827 happened, emigration towards Yurimaguas started. With this population influx, the city began to grow and it has always been known as "Historical Capital of the Peruvian Amazon," and "La Perla del Huallaga" for its natural beauty. The type of economy in these areas is mainly human consumption, and its main activities include hunting, fishing and pick up of native fruits. They also plant species such as banana and rice, corn and beans that indigenous communities have incorporated into their diet since a few decades ago.

Yurimaguas Peru, in the province of Alto Amazonas, Loreto, is a city of great natural attractions and invites you to enjoy the traditional drinks, food, dance, crafts and all the high Peruvian jungle has to offer. The Province of Alto Amazonas features 40.506 indigenous inhabitants, distributed in 243 communities and classified into 11 ethnic groups, the percentage representation of the indigenous population is the largest in the Region of Loreto with 48%.
